Chapter Eight
I hate this. When I dreamed of the Agency as a child, I was always doing things on my own like the main characters in all the action movies that are so popular.
Now I actually work there, it feels wrong to be going off on my own, even when I know I'm supposed to. We don't know if either of the others will be welcome at Nina's demonstration, so they're waiting outside in a surveillance van while I'm approaching what looks like a warehouse.
It's fine. I can do this, I know I can. All I have to do is stay calm and let other people do most of the talking. I have two phones on me in case the one in my bag gets taken away, though it'll raise questions if someone finds both. I don't care. It's better to stay safe than be sorry at a later date, especially with how wrong our rescue plan for Regina went, even before she escaped and revealed herself to be Ocypete to the three of us.
"Hi, I'm looking for Nina, she said to meet her today," I say to a bored-looking receptionist who looks as if she'll pop bubblegum in my face at the next opportunity. Perhaps that's mean of me to think, but I can't help it.
"I'll buzz her," the woman slurs. She sticks her finger onto a buzzer. "Nina. Front desk," she says into a microphone.
It's a far cry from the greeting I received when I went to meet Regina. But maybe that's the point?
I shift from one foot to another while I wait, hoping I don't look as uncomfortable as I feel. I wish I was going in with one of the others by my side.
"Hi, so sorry," Nina says as she bustles through the door. She's neatly turned out in form-fitting black clothing and her hair in a high ponytail.
She looks as if she means business, though I'm not sure what that means exactly.
I'm definitely looking a lot more casual in jeans and a shirt, but I know what I'm capable of in the combination, which makes it the right thing to have on.
"Hi, we met last night..."
"Ah, yes the harpy. Why don't you come through and I'll give you a tour."
I nod. "Thanks, Nina."
"I didn't catch your name," she says as she leads me away from the reception desk and into the main building. It turns out I'm right about it being a warehouse, at least if the insides I've seen so far are anything to go by.
"Harper."
She raises an eyebrow.
"My Mum has an odd sense of humour." One I'm really going to have to get my own back for at some point. The amount of looks like that I get over my name is crazy.
"And you stuck with it?"
I shrug. "It's my name. What else am I supposed to do?" I know I can technically change it, but I don't want to. By this point in my life, the joke is almost part of me.
"Fair enough.
